The Valley Hospital’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Medicine Department provides the full range of rehabilitation therapy specialties to assist patients in attaining their highest level of functioning following a stroke. Our therapists collaborate in providing each patient with optimal therapy, within a schedule that maximizes potential. Our Outpatient Rehabilitation Medicine team comprises licensed and certified physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, rehabilitation technicians, and a physiatrist. Our medical director, a board-certified physiatrist (physician specializing in rehabilitation medicine), is available for consultations, if necessary.
Located on the third floor of Valley’s outpatient offices at 505 Goffle Road in Ridgewood, our department features a state-of-the-art facility for physical, occupational, speech-language, and swallowing therapies. Our department is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To schedule an appointment, please call 201-447-8131. We participate in most major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, but please check with your individual health insurance carrier for specifics about your benefits. All therapies require a physician’s prescription. Our therapists can coordinate with vendors in ordering assistive devices as needed for patients.
Our licensed and certified physical therapists evaluate patients to assess their personal needs and then develop individualized treatment plans. Patients are evaluated for strength, balance, movement, sensations, transfers, and the use of assistive devices. Each patient’s therapy takes place within an individualized timeframe and includes one, two, or three sessions of therapy each week.
Our licensed and certified occupational therapists evaluate patients for their hand functions, ability to perform activities of daily living, cognitive abilities, sensations, socialization, and arm movements. Our simulated kitchen and tabletop activities help patients regaining functioning or learn compensatory strategies.
All patients coming for swallowing therapy must have a modified barium swallowing study, also called a "cookie" swallow test, performed at a hospital. Our licensed, certified speech-language pathologists at the Center for Speech-Language Pathology assist patients in regaining their ability to swallow foods. Some patients benefit from a combination of swallowing exercises and VitalStim® therapy, which provides electrical stimulation to the throat area. To learn more about the Center, please click here
Our licensed, certified speech-language pathologists at the Center for Speech-Language Pathology evaluate patients for aphasia, language difficulties, articulation disorders, cognitive abilities, and other speech problems. Therapy may incorporate compensatory therapies, augmentative equipment, computer programs, and other specialties, including the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment® LOUD method of therapy.
