Volunteer Services Update

Valley is pleased to offer all-virtual volunteer opportunities for high school students! See below for details.

All in-person volunteer service continues to be temporarily suspended throughout Valley Health System. Please continue to check back for news and updates throughout the fall.

As always, our decision was guided by keeping everyone's safety and health in mind. Looking forward to when we can all be together again!

Junior volunteers are a vital part of our volunteer team and some of our most enthusiastic members. They perform clerical tasks, deliver flowers, serve customers in Kurth Café, transport patients and run errands. They also help out at community events, such as disaster drills and health fairs for the public.

Volunteer Requirements

In addition to meeting the general requirements of all volunteers at Valley, high school volunteers must:

  • Have already started high school (September or later)
  • Be at least 14 years of age

Junior Volunteer Assignments

Once we receive your application, you will be invited, via email, to an orientation in accordance with when your application was received (this may take 4-6 weeks). You may be placed on a waitlist if assignments aren't available at the time you apply.

Assignments are based on age, individual interests, skills and the needs of Valley Health System. Morning, afternoon, evening and weekend positions are available.

Please be advised that we do not offer shadowing opportunities to high school-age volunteers or interns. You must be a rising third- or fourth-year college student focused on a medical career to be eligible to shadow.

Virtual Volunteer Opportunities for High School Students

To provide our volunteers with a safe alternative to in-person volunteering – as well as a way for students to meet their requirements for service and volunteer hours as part of their program or curriculum – we now offer virtual volunteer opportunities!

Please continue to check this section as more opportunities are added for virtual learning and earning service hours.

All virtual volunteer hours will be documented by volunteer name, and your total hours will be added to as you complete each new virtual opportunity. We're happy to provide you with documentation of total service hours, upon request.

Our goal is to keep you connected to service and learning!

Valley Health System Patient Experience Safety Survey (10 Volunteer Hours)

Our Patient Experience team wants to hear from you about patient safety! To earn 10 volunteer hours, survey 10 participants (may include family, friends, teachers or peers) using our online survey and submit their responses as 10 individual surveys.

All surveys must be submitted by Friday, January 15, 2020. For every additional 10 surveys you submit, you will receive an additional 10 volunteer hours.

Please be sure to execute these surveys keeping in mind the value and insight this data will provide to our Patient Experience Team. As the survey administrator, please encourage the subjects to share their thoughts in detail. This information has the potential to significantly impact how we provide service. Thank you for participating!

Virtual Structured Learning Experience

Valley Health System is pleased to offer a Virtual Structured Learning Experience (SLE) for all 2020-2021 High School Seniors of schools with SLE agreements (also referred to as Option 2 or Senior Option). This is not an in-person internship; it is strictly virtual.

If your school is not already affiliated with Valley Health System, your SLE coordinator must contact Katie Miller at kmiller4@valleyhealth.com before you complete an application. Application deadline is Monday, September 21, 2020.

Virtual Structured Learning Experience Application

Ready to Volunteer?

Students who wish to volunteer will need to complete an online application. Please note: While the Junior Volunteer Program no longer has deadlines, the application period will temporarily and briefly close throughout the year. During these times, the application will be unavailable. We appreciate your patience during these intervals. As a result, we cannot guarantee placements during a particular time of year (e.g. summer).
