Learn What Every Parent Needs to Know About Teen Opioid Addiction on June 5

The Valley Hospital in collaboration with New Bridge Medical Center and the Ridgewood Municipal Alliance will host a free program next month on preventing and treating opioid addiction in teens. The panel discussion, It Started in the Doctor’s Office – Opioid Addiction in Teens, will take place on Tuesday, June 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Ridgewood Community Center, Village Hall First Floor, 131 N. Maple Ave., Ridgewood.

While people of all ages are vulnerable to addiction, young people in particular are at risk to the powerful hold of prescription painkillers and illegal drugs like heroin, as their brains are still developing. The devastating effects of the opioid crisis have been felt by families all across the country and research has shown that most American teenagers who abuse opioid medications first received the drugs from a doctor for medical purposes, often for pain management. Meanwhile, the consequences of teen opioid abuse are clear, as a recent study showed that number of children and teens admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit for an opioid overdose nearly doubled between 2004 and 2015. In New Jersey, drug overdoses are the leading cause of accidental deaths.

How can families and health professionals prevent teens from misusing opioids? Join us for a conversation with knowledgeable professionals and addiction and recovery experts to learn strategies to keep kids from abusing opioids, how to recognize the signs of drug dependence and how to get help for young people battling addiction. In addition, hear one person’s story on their personal recovery journey overcoming opioid and heroin addiction.
