The Valley Hospital to ‘Go Blue’ this March to Raise Awareness about Colon Cancer

Free Prevention Programs Planned in Collaboration with
Borough of Paramus and Community Partners

February 2, 2018 – Free golf lessons with certified pros. A trendy fashion show. Gourmet cooking demonstrations.  These are just some of the unique programs The Valley Hospital has in store for the Paramus community this March. It’s all part of Valley’s “Go Blue” initiative in recognition of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. The hospital has teamed up with the borough of Paramus and community partners Gold’s Gym of Paramus, ShopRite of Paramus and the American Cancer Society to offer a series of fun and exciting activities while opening up the conversation about this deadly, yet highly preventable, detectable and treatable disease.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Fortunately, with proper screening, it can often be prevented or cured when detected at its earliest stages. In fact, there are now more than 1 million survivors of colorectal cancer in the U.S. thanks to improved prevention and treatment.

“Early detection is critical to saving lives,” said Ephraim Casper, M.D., FACP, Chief Medical Officer, Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care. “At Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care we are committed to fighting colorectal cancer by getting more people screened and providing our community with educational and preventive resources.”

In addition to the “Go Blue” programs, Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care will provide free colorectal cancer screening kits throughout the entire month of March. The kits can be picked up at the the North Information Desk of Luckow Pavilion, One Valley Health Plaza, Paramus from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the dates of Thursday, March 1 through Friday, March 30. One kit per person.

Both men and women are at risk for developing colorectal cancer, making it important for all individuals to be aware of its signs and risk factors. Individuals over the age of 50 are encouraged to undergo regular screening, as symptoms of colorectal cancer often do not appear during its early stages.

The Valley Hospital is proud to be among the more than 1,500 local and national organizations that have committed to increase colorectal cancer screening rates as part 80% by 2018, an initiative of the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable, The American Cancer Society, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The program aims to have 80 percent of adults aged 50 and older screened for colorectal cancer by 2018.

In partnership with Mount Sinai Health System, Valley Health System provides state-of-the-art, comprehensive cancer care in northern New Jersey. A designated Comprehensive Hospital Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons, Valley's oncology services are guided by a multidisciplinary Cancer Committee and delivered by a team of cancer experts who are leaders in their field.
