Valley Health System is pleased to welcome Eric Lazar, MD, MBA, MS, FACS, FAAP, Chair of Surgical Services for Valley Medical Group and Program Director of the soon-to-be-established General Surgery Residency Program.
Dr. Lazar is a pediatric surgeon who is board certified in general and pediatric surgery. He specializes in a variety of pediatric areas including newborn congenital anomalies, medical emergencies, and routine surgical care.
Dr. Lazar joins an esteemed faculty of pediatric surgeons at The Valley Hospital, in partnership with Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital.
“I believe when a child is sick, a whole family is sick. It is my job to provide answers and solutions to help families navigate their way through this journey and nurture their child back to good health and happiness,” said Dr. Lazar.
Dr. Lazar will see patients at 140 East Ridgewood Avenue, in Paramus, New Jersey, and perform surgical interventions at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood.
As Director of the soon-to-be-established General Surgery Residency Program, Dr. Lazar will also have leadership responsibility for the introduction of the new surgical residency program that Valley Health System will initiate in partnership with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The soon-to-be-established General Surgery Residency Program will educate and train the next generation of physicians in the field of surgery. An application for the residency program has been submitted. Valley anticipates approval in the near future, resulting in the start of a recruitment process in 2024 and matriculation of the first class in July 2025. This program would be added to the roster of graduate medical education at Valley, which currently includes two established residency programs in Internal Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
“Training residents creates a legacy for the institution and those who teach there. As a clinician, I might do 600 cases per year, but if I am training residents over a twenty or thirty-year period and each of them graduates to care for 600 surgical patients per year or more, then indirectly, but importantly, I have cared for tens of thousands of patients,” said Dr. Lazar.

Dr. Lazar obtained his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York. He completed his residency in general surgery from New York University and fellowships in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation at Columbia University and pediatric surgery at Children’s Hospital of New York.
