At Valley, we are committed to providing our patients with exceptional medical care and a positive patient experience. To ensure our staff can provide you with the highest quality clinical care and service while with us, there may be times where your care team will determine that your stay should be at Valley Health System’s Ridgewood Observation Unit, located in the Bergen Building at our Ridgewood Campus.

As a patient in the Ridgewood Observation Unit, you will have the benefit of the same clinical and amenity services available at The Valley Hospital, including private rooms, and the skilled, competent, and caring staff you would expect from Valley.

Our goal is to support your recovery with comfort, efficiency, and personalized care.

What Is an Observation Unit?

Valley’s Ridgewood Observation Unit is designed to provide high-quality, personalized care. Patients referred to this unit typically come through The Valley Hospital’s Emergency Department. They may require additional time for evaluation, diagnostic testing, and treatment, or need further medical care before they can be safely discharged home.

What Can I Expect After I Leave the Emergency Department?

Following your initial treatment in the Emergency Department:

  1. While you are a patient in our Emergency Department, a physician will perform a medical screening evaluation and provide stabilizing treatment.
  2. You will then be transported to our Admission Unit where a care team led by a physician will take a complete medical history and perform a physical examination.
  3. If observation is warranted, you will be transported to the Ridgewood Observation Unit via a Special Care Transport Unit—a specially equipped vehicle operated by our Emergency Medical Services team.
  4. Upon arrival in Ridgewood, your care team—already briefed on your condition—will be waiting to welcome and care for you.

Who Will Care for Me at the Ridgewood Observation Unit?

Your care team at the Ridgewood Observation Unit will be led by a dedicated nurse, who will work closely with:

  • Your physician
  • A Valley hospitalist physician
  • Additional physician specialists, as needed

In addition, your team may include:

  • A case manager
  • A patient care associate
  • A registrar
  • And, if needed:
    • Physical, occupational, or speech therapists
    • Respiratory therapists
    • Home care staff

This collaborative approach ensures you receive comprehensive, well-coordinated care throughout your stay.

How Long Will I Stay?

Most patients stay in the Ridgewood Observation Unit between 24 to 48 hours. This allows us to:

  • Reduce the time you spend in our Emergency Department
  • Continue your observation and treatment in a more restful, comfortable setting
  • Provide you with a comprehensive care plan to guide your recovery

Your care team will also collaborate with community resources and your physician to ensure appropriate follow-up care is arranged before you leave.

Can My Family Stay With Me?

Yes, your family is welcome to remain with you for the duration of your stay in our Ridgewood Observation Unit. We encourage your family’s involvement in your care plan and strive to make them feel at home during your stay.

Visiting is encouraged, and to ensure that your guests are comfortable, we have a family room and kitchen that are accessible around the clock.

Is There a Chance That I Will Have a Hospital Stay in Paramus?

While most patients in the Ridgewood Observation Unit are discharged home, some may require inpatient admission to the hospital in Paramus based on their medical needs.

If hospitalization is necessary:

  • Your follow-up care will be managed by the team on your inpatient floor
  • Follow-up appointments will be scheduled before you are discharged from the hospital
  • Any necessary pre-certifications for testing will be handled for you
  • The team will assist in arranging transportation if needed

Some patients may also qualify for an at-home follow-up visit from Valley Home Care following discharge. If you meet the requirements for these services, the team will schedule these visits for you as well.
