Mesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancer that arises from the lining of the lung (pleura).
Who develops mesothelioma?
The most common risk factors for developing mesothelioma are a known exposure to asbestos and smoking. Most patients tend to be older and of male gender.
What are the symptoms of mesothelioma?
Symptoms vary, depending on the form of mesothelioma you have, but common symptoms include:
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Unexplained weight loss
It’s important to note that these symptoms can signal other illnesses. The only way to get a definitive diagnosis is to visit your physician.
How is mesothelioma diagnosed?
After a physical exam, typically imaging studies, such as chest X-rays or computed tomography (CT) scans, are required and biopsies may be needed for confirmation.
How is mesothelioma treated?
At Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care, we employ a multidisciplinary approach towards the treatment of mesothelioma.
Treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, or a combination of these treatments. In addition, new types of treatments are often being tested in clinical trials.
