If you have lymphedema – a buildup of lymphatic fluid under the skin – you’re probably all-too-familiar with the uncomfortable swelling in your arms, legs or other parts of the body. While there is no cure for this condition, relief is possible through Valley’s lymphedema program, where our goal is to improve your limb function and your overall quality of life.
Here, our specially trained and certified therapists begin your care with a thorough evaluation, measuring the circumference of your limb and assessing your range of motion, strength, tissue texture and function. Our team will then recommend a customized treatment plan, which may include:
- Compression garments
- Wrapping the affected limb
- Manual lymphatic drainage therapy, a specialized massage technique that stimulates the flow of lymphatic fluid back to the lymphatic system
- Primary lymphedema: This condition can be present at birth (congenital) or develop after puberty. It may run in some families and may be associated with other inherited conditions.
- Secondary lymphedema: This condition may occur after damage to or obstruction of the lymph vessels. This may result from surgery, infection or trauma.
