Your provider may order positron emission tomography – also known as a PET scan – to guide your diagnosis and care. This diagnostic imaging tool is often combined with a CT scan for more detailed and accurate results.

PET scans can be used to:

  • Diagnose and stage certain cancers
  • Help evaluate heart disease and neurological conditions (including Alzheimer’s disease)
  • Detect how tissues and organs are functioning by tracking metabolic activity
  • Identify abnormal or diseased tissue more clearly than traditional imaging
