Depending on your visit type, you may have an ultrasound, bloodwork, and/or a consultation with a genetic counselor. Choose a test below to learn more about what you can expect at your maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) appointment.

Nuchal Translucency Ultrasound

  • This is a screening test. It screens for the possibility of Down syndrome (trisomy 21), trisomy 18, and trisomy 13. This is the most important part of the test. Gender results can be included in this test if requested at the time of your visit.
  • It is advised you drink fluids prior to the exam, as a semi-full bladder may be helpful.
  • You will be checked in by our registration staff.
  • Our professional sonographers will perform the ultrasound.
  • Ultrasounds are reviewed and discussed with the perinatologist (MFM physician).
  • Bloodwork may be completed in the MFM lab if ordered by your provider.
  • Your cell free DNA bloodwork (cfDNA) results will be available 10-14 days after we send it out. Please do not call for results. All patients will be called once MFM receive the results. We are unable to expedite these results.
  • Your results are uploaded to your portal by your OB/GYN’s office. We do not have an MFM portal. Any concerns or questions about your portal should be addressed with your primary obstetric provider.
  • You may also visit with our expertly trained genetic counselors during this visit if advised by your provider.

Anatomy Ultrasound

  • This test looks at all body parts of the fetus in depth.
  • You do not need to arrive with a full bladder, but we do recommend eating before your appointment.
  • You will be checked in by our registration staff.
  • This appointment typically lasts 1-1 ½ hours for a single gestational pregnancy. If there are twins, the ultrasound will take longer.
  • Our professional sonographers will perform the ultrasound. Your sonographer will try to provide ultrasound pictures, however this is not guaranteed.
  • Ultrasounds are reviewed and discussed with the perinatologist (MFM physician).
  • Further appointments will be determined by the MFM team or your OB provider’s office.
