On Tuesday, September 21, 2023, Tia Welsh, MD, Chair of Women’s Services for Valley Medical Group, presented at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s (CBCF) 52nd Annual Legislative Conference, held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Welsh spoke during a session hosted by U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly and Smith +Nephew, a medical technology company focused on the repair, regeneration, and replacement of the body’s tissue, about infection prevention practices to reduce maternal mortality. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women in this country.
“I am honored to represent Valley at this distinguished conference,” said Dr. Welsh. “It is a privilege to be a voice for the racial disparities in the healthcare setting and discuss how we can work together to reduce Black maternal mortality.”
The CBCF’s Annual Legislative Conference is the leading policy conference on issues impacting African Americans and the global Black Community. Thought leaders, legislators, and activists engage in discussions on economic development, civil and social justice, public health, and education issues. This year’s conference theme was “Securing Our Democracy. Protecting Our Freedoms. Uplifting Our Culture.”
