The Valley Hospital’s David F. Bolger Emergency Department has received the 2026 Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Lantern Award. The Valley Hospital is among an elite group of 126 hospitals nationwide to earn this award and the only hospital in Bergen County to receive this award for three cycles (each cycle consists of a 3-year period), according to the ENA.
The Valley Hospital’s Emergency Department provides comprehensive, around-the-clock care for all types of medical emergencies, following the highest safety standards and clinical protocols. Patients are treated by board-certified emergency medicine physicians and highly trained emergency nurses. The hospital also offers a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department that is open 24/7 for newborns, children, adolescents, and young adults, featuring separate treatment rooms designed to provide a child-friendly environment and specialized emergency care tailored to younger patients.

The Lantern Award recognizes emergency departments that create environments where patients receive safe, high-quality care and clinical teams are empowered to excel. Earning the distinction reflects an organization's commitment to demonstrating exceptional innovation and evidence-based practice improvements that resulted in improved patient care.
Through a rigorous application process, emergency departments must demonstrate achievements in areas such as quality improvement, evidence-based practice, professional development, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
“The Lantern recognizes something incredibly special. It isn’t an award for an individual or an entire hospital – it’s a recognition earned by an emergency department and the team that powers it every day,” said ENA President Dustin Bass, DNP, MHA, RN, CEN, NEA-BC.
