The Valley Hospital offers the communities it serves a full-service emergency department providing emergency services and minor treatment services. All physicians on the active staff are board certified in emergency medicine, and many nurses are certified in emergency nursing.

Services include a minor treatment area and a pediatric emergency room that features a child-friendly layout and design.

Valley's emergency department also features the services of several mobile intensive care units which answer thousands of calls each year. Mobile intensive care units, staffed by qualified Valley paramedics, are specially equipped vehicles that bring the highly sophisticated techniques of intravenous therapy, airway management, cardiac monitoring and defibrillation directly to people in need of emergency care.

Valley also offers Lifeline, a communication device that links a homebound individual with emergency care or personal support with the push of a button, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For more information on this service, call (201) 291-6233.

Pediatric Emergency Room

Children become ill at all hours of the day and night. That’s why The Valley Hospital’s pediatric emergency room is open around the clock, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

With separate waiting areas and treatment rooms, the pediatric emergency room offers the department’s youngest patients a place where they can be evaluated and treated away from the adult treatment areas.

“To meet the needs of our youngest patients at all hours, we have recruited several full-time and part-time board-certified pediatricians with expertise in pediatric emergency medicine and registered nurses who have extensive experience in providing emergency care for newborns, children, adolescents, and young adults,” says Peter Lee, M.D., Director of the Pediatric Emergency Room.

The Valley Hospital’s Emergency Department is one of New Jersey’s busiest, evaluating and treating more than 70,000 patients each year. Approximately 18,000 of these patients are 20 years old or younger.

“The sounds, views, and surroundings of an adult ER can be frightening to a child who is sick or injured,” says Dr. Lee, who is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine. “Our pediatric ER allows children to be diagnosed and treated within a soothing environment that is equipped with appropriate pediatric technology and equipment. Around-the-clock pediatric emergency care also benefits our community pediatricians, who desire that their patients be treated by board-certified pediatricians in our ER. We will be able to admit patients who must be hospitalized expeditiously. We also have a full roster of pediatric subspecialists who are either in the hospital at all times or readily available for consultation.”

Valley’s Department of Pediatrics includes pediatric subspecialists in neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, surgery, urology, otolaryngology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, and developmental pediatrics.

For children who require further evaluation or hospitalization after their ER visit, Valley’s specialized pediatric services include a neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric intensive care unit, pediatric epilepsy monitoring unit, pediatric respiratory unit for patients with breathing problems, general pediatric inpatient unit, and the outpatient Kireker Center for Child Development in Ridgewood. Due to Valley’s affiliation with NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System, children who require additional services may be referred there for follow-up.
