The Valley Hospital Auxiliary Retires $2 Million Pledge to Valley
On Thursday, November 19, 2009, the Auxiliary’s Central Board members made their final donation on the $2 million pledge to The Valley Hospital. This is an impressive accomplishment that took three and a half years of perseverance by these dedicated volunteers. On behalf of the Auxiliary, Sue Kelly, Auxiliary President, presented a final check to Anastasios Kozaitis, President of The Valley Hospital Foundation, and Audrey Meyers, CEO of The Valley Hospital.
The pledge entailed the following projects:
- Support for a new Women’s Health Unit
- The purchase of a 64-slice CT Scanner – a vital tool in the diagnosis of cardiac disease
- The expansion of an Inpatient Pediatric Suite
- The successful Hospitalists Program
- Valley Home Care’s Butterflies Pediatric Hospice program – the only one of its kind in the State of New Jersey.

The Valley Hospital Auxiliary is Proud to Announce its New Pledge to The Valley Hospital

Valley’s Center for Women’s Heart Health was established to raise awareness of the cause, symptoms, and prevalence of heart disease in women. The Center’s goal is to educate women on preventing, diagnosing and treating heart disease. Part of our mission includes offering a comprehensive heart risk assessment for women. The Valley Hospital Auxiliary is proud to support this worthy cause and has pledged a donation in the amount of $500,000 to benefit this program.

The Valley Hospital Auxiliary Celebrated 65th Anniversary in 2009
Travel back through time to 1944, 65 years ago, seven and a half years prior to the opening of The Valley Hospital. A small group of women organized to form the Women’s Auxiliary of The Valley Hospital.
When it began, the average cost of a new house was $3,450. A loaf of bread was 10 cents and a gallon of gas was 15 cents. Average wages were $2,400 per year.
Franklin D. Roosevelt became the only U.S. President to be elected to a fourth term, and a 5.9 earthquake hit central New York. “Going my Way” won the Oscar for best film and Ingrid Bergman won best actress for her memorable performance in “Gaslight”.
While all of these things were happening, this group founded an Auxiliary. The heart and soul of The Valley Hospital, the Women’s Auxiliary has a membership of over 2,000 dedicated men and women residing in the sixteen towns that the hospital primarily services.
Members staff the Kurth Cottage Café and the Gift Shop, Surgical Waiting, and many other areas. Their smiling faces and compassionate manner are seen all over Valley’s campuses.
Even the most optimistic of people back in 1944 would not have dared to predict the success of the Auxiliary, which has raised in excess of $14 million for the hospital. While the panorama has changed, the qualities of the Auxiliary have remained constant: commitment to excellence, concern for people, and a regard for the community.
As we reflect upon our founders and how things were in the “good old days,” there are even better, more challenging, more rewarding, and more exciting days to come!
