College Applicants

   

volunteer 2014We are now accepting college applications for Winter 2014 and Spring 2015 placements. If you are interested in PA Shadowing for Spring 2015 the application deadline is Friday, January 30, 2015.  Please make sure that your application includes all three necessary items (see bottom of page) to ensure consideration.  Decisions will be made in February. 

There is no longer a Winter PA Shadowing Program.

The Physician Shadowing Program applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Kindly download the College Volunteer Application here. Once downloaded, please print and fill out the full packet, including listing the contact information for three valid references, and mail to:

Once received, your references are mailed out and your application is reviewed. If you do not hear from us immediately, we do not have an assignment that matches your availability, interest, and skill set at this time, but will continue to keep your application on file for consideration as new positions become available.

Assignments are based on individual interests, skills, and the needs of The Valley Hospital and Valley Home Care. Morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend positions are available.



Things You Need to Know:

Minimal requirements of all volunteers include:

  • Ability to understand and communicate clearly.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to give and follow direction.
  • Ability to satisfactorily meet the requirements of the position.
  • Ability to participate in annual TB screenings/education and complete post-tests.
  • Ability to respond promptly and appropriately to customer requests.
  • Ability to respond effectively in an emergency and offer assistance as necessary.
  • Ability to project a positive outlook and willingness to help as needed.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to commit to at least six months of service.

Applicants who are invited to join our program must receive favorable references and pass a criminal background check. Before starting an assignment, you will need to be oriented to the hospital policies and procedures, fulfill mandatory health requirements, and complete a self-learning education module.


If you are a college student who has already completed your freshman year and are seriously considering a career in medicine, please refer to the following programs that we have available. Placements are not guaranteed.** 
 

Physician Shadowing (PSP):
A position designed to allow medically-minded students to gain exposure and experience in their intended fields of study. Students are selected to shadow a physician in an area of their interest where they gather a truthful understanding of an operational healthcare environment, while identifying the needs of patients and families, assisting as needed. This is a year-round program in which students are selected after careful consideration.

Physician Assistant (PA) Shadowing:
A position designed to allow students aspiring to explore the role of a physician assistant in a healthcare setting. Students observe clinical procedures in both surgical and non-surgical settings, shadow healthcare professionals, and gain an understanding of patient cases in the respective rotation focuses. This program is available four times during the year: in the Fall, during Winter Break, Spring, and throughout the Summer. Career Development:
A position designed to allow students to volunteer, shadow, and assist healthcare professionals.  Students will learn about the operation of a healthcare environment and gain an understanding of the needs of patients and families.

**In addition to filling out a College Volunteer Application, all of these programs require applicants to submit a copy of their most current unofficial college transcript.**
