Anusak Yiengpruksawan, M.D. (Dr. Yieng), is Director of The Valley Hospital Institute for Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery. Dr. Yieng was trained in gastrointestinal cancer surgery under Professor Hiroshi Akiyama, an internationally known esophageal surgeon, at Toranomon Hospital in Tokyo, Japan. He came to the United States in 1984 and completed a residency in surgery at Harlem Hospital Center and a fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Prior to joining the medical staff of The Valley Hospital in 1995, Dr. Yieng was Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and Director of the Endoscopic Ultrasound Lab at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn. Dr. Yieng specializes in treating cancer of the GI system, liver, pancreas, and soft tissue sarcomas.
He has performed more than 650 robotic procedures at Valley and is internationally recognized for his skills in endoscopic ultrasound, minimally invasive surgery, and robotic surgery. Dr. Yieng is one of the first surgeons in New Jersey to use the da Vinci® Surgical System to remove a spleen, adrenal glands, and tumors of the stomach, pancreas, and esophagus. He is one of the few surgeons in the country who performs endoscopic ultrasound, an imaging technique that allows for effective diagnosis and staging of tumors. Dr. Yieng performs more than 40 cases of major pancreatic surgery each year, marking The Valley Hospital as a high volume cancer center, according to the Leapfrog Group. He has written and presented his works and given lectures on endoscopic ultrasound and robotic surgery both nationally and internationally. Dr. Yieng contributed a chapter on his method of performing robotically assisted Whipple procedures for the recently published American College of Surgery Multimedia Atlas of Surgery: Pancreas Surgery Volume. Dr. Yieng is a visiting faculty at Beijing ErPao Hospital in China and Bangkok Siriraj Hospital in Thailand. He is one of the founding members of the Clinical Robotic Surgical Association, an international organization devoted to the advancement of clinical robotic surgery based in Chicago.
Besides clinical research relating to endoscopic ultrasound and robotic surgery, Dr. Yieng is currently participating in several Valley Hospital clinical research studies with the Southwest Oncology Group to evaluate new treatment combinations of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy for pancreatic, esophageal, and stomach cancers.
