Valley Weight-Loss Surgery Program Receives Full Accreditation

August 23, 2016 – The Valley Hospital’s weight-loss (bariatric) surgery program has received Full Accreditation as a Comprehensive Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®), a joint program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). MBSAQIP is designed to assist metabolic and bariatric surgery patients in identifying centers that provide optimal surgical care.

To qualify for the three-year accreditation, metabolic and bariatric surgery programs had to meet the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®) standards, outlined in the Resources for Optimal Care of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Patient 2014.  These standards included providing bariatric surgical patients with a multidisciplinary program, not just a surgical procedure, to improve patient outcomes and long-term success. Accredited centers offer preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for their severely obese patients.

“We are thrilled that we have received Full Accreditation as a Comprehensive Center,” said Melissa Bagloo, M.D., FACS, Medical Director of Valley’s Center for Bariatric Surgery and Weight-Loss Management.  “This recognition acknowledges our demonstrated commitment to quality improvement and patient safety efforts for metabolic and bariatric surgery patients.”

Centers seeking MBSAQIP Accreditation undergo an extensive site visit by an experienced bariatric surgeon, who reviews the center's structure, process and clinical outcomes data. Centers are awarded a specific designation depending on how many patients it serves annually and the type of procedures it provides.

In addition to the program’s accreditation, Dr. Bagloo and bariatric surgeon Vadim Gritsus, M.D., FACS, have been recognized as MBSAQIP Verified Surgeons for The Valley Hospital for demonstrating compliance with standards outlined in the Resources for Optimal Care of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Patient 2014.

In the United States, around 15.5 million people suffer from severe obesity, according to the National Institutes of Health, and the numbers continue to increase.  Obesity increases the risks of morbidity and mortality because of the diseases and conditions that are commonly associated with it, such as type II diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, among other health risks.  Metabolic and bariatric surgical procedures have proven to be effective in the reduction of comorbid conditions related to severe obesity.

Valley’s bariatric surgery program focuses on providing a multidisciplinary approach to bariatric surgery, offering patients personalized surgical options and a full spectrum of medical and support services to assist them in improving their health.
