Psychological Services

Coping with infertility can be challenging for most people. The Valley Hospital Fertility Center offers psychological counseling services on site and by referral. Many people find that their struggle to have a child is less painful when they have a regular outlet for their feelings as well as access to new coping strategies.

Common reasons for seeing an infertility counselor include:

  • Sadness, anger or guilt that does not lift
  • Strain on relationships with friends and family
  • Concern about the potential relationship between stress and infertility
  • Indecisiveness about a treatment plan
  • Inability to enjoy anything or think of anything besides having a baby
  • Desire for additional support
  • Receipt of bad news, such as poor test results or pregnancy loss

Kim Altman Weiss, Ph.D., provides psychological services at The Valley Hospital Fertility Center. She is a licensed clinical psychologist who has completed fellowship training in infertility counseling and reproductive issues.  She has been a consultant for fertility specialists since 2000.

Dr. Weiss earned her doctorate at Fordham University where she conducted research and clinical work in health psychology. She completed an internship concentrating in Family and Child Therapy at Westchester Jewish Community Services. Dr. Weiss received specialized training from nationally known experts in the field of infertility counseling at the Center for Reproductive Medicine and Infertility at Weill Cornell Medical Center.

The following psychological services are offered:

  • individual psychotherapy
  • stress management (mind-body) training
  • couples therapy
  • group therapy
  • consultations regarding donor sperm, donor egg, donor embryo and surrogacy

Why are psychology services important?

Often patients think about talking to a professional about their experience with infertility, but hesitate because they believe they “should be able to handle it” on their own. Others hesitate because they believe talking about it would be uncomfortable. Some hesitate because they believe the only thing that would make them feel better would be to become pregnant. Some are plain tired of making doctors’ appointments.

However, time and time again, patients who use psychological services say their struggle to have a child is much less painful when they have a regular outlet for their feelings and take the opportunity to learn new coping strategies. A therapist who specializes in this area and understands your medical treatment can be particularly helpful.

There may be a time when your physician will ask you to make an appointment for a psychological consultation, for example, if you are considering treatment with donor egg or donor sperm. You may also be referred if the treatment team feels you – or they – need psychological guidance in helping an individual or couple through treatment.
