What would you like patients to know about your approach to care?

I think it is important to treat each patient as an individual and spend quality time listening carefully to their symptoms and concerns. If we hear what is truly on the patient's mind, then we will do a much better job of helping the patient understand the tests that we order for them, the results as they come back, and the reasons for the treatments that we prescribe. Patients who feel they have been carefully heard and have been a partner in their care plan will be motivated to stick to that plan to better their health.

What inspired you to become a doctor?

In high school I spent quite a bit of time as a candy striper. It was very exciting to watch the physicians as they took care of patients in the hospital and worked with the hospital staff. I was lucky to be good in science and my early exposure to medicine left me convinced that that was the field for me.
