What would you like patients to know about your approach to care?
I think it is important to treat each patient as an individual and spend quality time listening carefully to their symptoms and concerns. If we hear what is truly on the patient's mind, then we will do a much better job of helping the patient understand the tests that we order for them, the results as they come back, and the reasons for the treatments that we prescribe. Hopefully, the patient who feels they have been carefully heard and been a partner in their care plan development will be maximally motivated to follow that plan to better health.
What inspired you to become a doctor?
In high school I spent quite a bit of time as a candy stripper. It was very exciting to watch the physicians as they took care of patients in the hospital and worked with the hospital staff. I was lucky to be good in science and my early exposure to medicine left me convinced that that was the field for me.
