“Food Fight” Against Colon Cancer: Lower Your Risk with Proper Nutrition on March 6

The Valley Hospital will host a free community health program, Food Fight Against Colon Cancer, on Wednesday, March 6 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at The Valley Center for Health and Wellness, 1400 MacArthur Boulevard, Mahwah.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, the perfect time to learn what you can do to stop this deadly, yet highly preventable, detectable and treatable disease.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Fortunately, with proper screening, it can often be prevented or cured when detected at its earliest stages. In fact, there are now more than 1 million survivors of colorectal cancer in the U.S. thanks to improved prevention and treatment.

Both men and women are at risk for developing colorectal cancer, and it occurs more commonly among older adults. That’s why it’s so important to be aware of its signs and risk factors, including the role diet and nutrition play in protecting our health.

So join Leigh Slagle, M.S., R.D., CSO, Dietitian, for a rundown of the foods to avoid and what foods you should add to your plate to reduce your risk of colorectal cancer.
