Valley’s Diabetes Education Program Recognized by American Diabetes Association

March 18, 2018

Valley Home Care’s Diabetes Self-Management Education Program for adults has been awarded continued recognition by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for meeting the national standards for diabetes self-management education. Valley’s program has received this recognition consecutively since 2001.

The ADA Recognition is a four-year certificate of recognition awarded to programs that offer high-quality diabetes education services. All approved diabetes education programs cover information relating to the disease, including: nutritional management; physical activity; medications; monitoring, preventing, detecting, and treating acute and chronic complications; psychological adjustment; and diabetes management during preconception and pregnancy.

“We are proud to be recognized by the ADA for our efforts in educating adults on how to self-manage their diabetes,” said Donna Fry, President, Valley Home Care. “When a person is well-educated on the disease and knows how to properly manage their symptoms, they can have a tremendous positive impact on their own physical and emotional health.”

According to the ADA, patient self-care is an essential component of diabetes treatment. Through the support of the healthcare team and increased knowledge and awareness of diabetes, the patient can assume a major part of the responsibility for his or her diabetes management. Unnecessary hospital admissions and some of the acute and chronic complications of diabetes may be prevented through self-management education.

Valley Home Care’s Diabetes Self-Management Education Program is available for anyone with diabetes who is interested in learning how to manage their new diabetes diagnosis or better manage their current diabetes status. The adult program is a four-week course with two-hour meetings once a week. It also includes an initial individual assessment and post-program follow-up.  Valley also offers support groups for both adults and children with diabetes.
