The Valley Hospital is pleased to offer 3D mammography, also known as digital breast tomosynthesis, to all patients at the Breast Imaging Center.
“3D mammography has been shown to make the most difference for women with dense breasts and/or those with a personal history of breast cancer,” said Kristien Zingone, Director, Diagnostic Imaging. “It provides radiologists a clearer, more unobstructed view of the breast which leads to better detection, fewer call backs and greater piece of mind. We offer this type of mammography to all women who come to our breast center as it provides the most accurate views of the breast.”
3D mammography is similar to a conventional mammogram except it uses multiple images to create a three-dimensional view of the breast. With conventional digital mammography, the radiologist views breast tissue in flat, 2D images. Sometimes, breast tissue can overlap and give the illusion that normal breast tissue is abnormal.
The benefits of 3D mammography include:
• Greater accuracy in pinpointing size, shape and location of abnormalities
• Earlier detection of small breast cancers that may be hidden during 2D mammography
• Greater likelihood of detecting multiple breast tumors, which occur in 15% of breast cancer patients
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.
