Parents: Learn About the Developing Mind of Teenagers on Sept. 18

The Valley Hospital will host a free community health program, The Teenage Brain, on Monday, September 18 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Township of Washington Public Library, 144 Woodfield Road, Township of Washington.

Whether it’s the stress of school or social pressures, the life of a teenager is filled with many challenges. Meanwhile, teenagers confront these challenges while their brains are not yet fully developed. In fact, the brain continues to mature and develop throughout adolescence and well into early adulthood.

That is why it is important for parents to understand what their child’s brains are going through. It’s no secret that teenagers behave differently than adults. Teenagers are more likely to act impulsively without pausing to consider the consequences of their actions, experience mood swings or misinterpret social cues and emotions.

Join Valley’s Director of Pediatric Psychiatry Kai-ping Wang, M.D. to learn about the changes happening in the brain of a teenager to help your son or daughter navigate life’s challenges during this critical period in their development.

Dr. Wang has more than 13 years of experience in his specialty and is board-certified in both general psychiatry and child/adolescent psychiatry. He was recently appointed president of the Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists and named a “Favorite Kids’ Doc” by New Jersey Family magazine.
