January 23, 2014 -- Just as he has for the past 61 years, Marvin Wisch, D.O., walks down one flight of stairs in his Fair Lawn home each morning to reach his medical office on the first floor. There, alongside staff he has worked with for several decades, the 91-year-old family physician and geriatrician cares for the health care needs of three generations of children and adults.
Recently, Dr. Wisch made a big change that he says will allow him “to enhance patient care and practice medicine the old-fashioned way, without many of the constraints of managed care”. He joined Valley Medical Group (VMG), a multispecialty group practice comprising doctors and advanced practice professionals representing more than 30 medical and surgical specialties. VMG – which joins The Valley Hospital and Valley Home Care as the three entities that form Valley Health System – has office locations throughout the region.
“I continue to practice medicine as I always have but am now able to spend more time with my patients in diagnosing their illnesses and caring for their chronic health care needs rather than worrying about the business of running an office,” says Dr. Wisch.
Dr. Wisch began his career in 1946 as a veterinarian after graduating from the Middlesex University School of Veterinary Medicine in Massachusetts. He was a merchant marine and chief consultant in veterinary medicine for the United Nations Relief Rehabilitation Association. He accompanied horses in ships across the Atlantic, which were being brought overseas to Europe to replenish the horse population after World War II. He operated a veterinary medical practice in Connecticut until he changed careers and graduated from the College of Osteopathic Physicians & Surgeons in 1951. He completed his residency at the California College of Medicine at the University of California at Irvine.
Dr. Wisch joined The Valley Hospital medical staff in 1976 and over the years has been a member of numerous hospital committees. From 1983 to 1991, he was Director of the Department of Family Medicine. Throughout his career, he has acted as a family practice preceptor to medical students, pharmaceutical representatives, and nurses. He is currently Fair Lawn’s police surgeon, medical advisor to the Board of Health, and Director of Education of the New Jersey Chapter of the ACGP. He has been president three times of the Bergen/Passaic Counties Chapter of the ACGP.
Valley Medical Group (VMG) offers close physician collaboration within and across medical specialties and seamless integration with all the resources Valley Health System has to offer.
VMG brings together doctors who practice at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, Valley’s Blumenthal Cancer Center in Paramus, seven urgent and primary care centers, and community-based practices located throughout the region. Medical specialties represented include cardiology, hospital-based pediatrics, dermatology, surgery, family practice, internal medicine, OB/GYN, and oncology.
VMG offers close physician collaboration within and across medical specialties and seamless integration with all the resources Valley Health System has to offer. Valley’s quality distinctions include four consecutive “A” ratings for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group; recognition by Healthgrades as one of America’s 100 Best hospitals for cardiac surgery and orthopedic surgery; three consecutive Magnet designations for nursing excellence; and the 2013 Women’s Choice Award for being voted one of America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Experience by women.
