October 14, 2013 -- The Valley Hospital is pleased to welcome Mark Shapiro, M.D., to the thoracic surgery team at the Blumenthal Cancer Center in Paramus. Dr. Shapiro is board certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery. He completed a thoracic surgery fellowship and joins thoracic surgeons Robert Korst, M.D., and Benjamin Lee, M.D., at the Cancer Center.
Dr. Shapiro received his medical degree at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 2005, where he was honored to be awarded the Eugene W. Friedman, M.D., Prize for Clinical Excellence in Surgery. He commenced a residency in general surgery at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. Midway through his residency, Dr. Shapiro accomplished a research fellowship in thoracic surgery in collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Working with the faculty of thoracic surgery, pulmonology and epidemiology departments, Dr. Shapiro led clinical research projects analyzing risk factors and outcomes of patients undergoing surgery for lung cancer. He also participated in science projects examining the signaling pathways in patients with lung cancer and their relationship to cancer recurrence.
Before completing his general surgery residency, Dr. Shapiro held the role of Chief Resident at Mount Sinai Medical Center where he continued with his training and completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery, thoracic track.
Dr. Shapiro continues to perform research in thoracic surgery, which has been published in leading medical journals and presented at multiple prestigious cardiothoracic surgery and pulmonary conferences. His clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery for lung cancer, mediastinal tumors, and benign and malignant esophageal diseases. Dr. Shapiro is fluent in Russian.
Dr. Shapiro is a member of Valley Medical Group, Valley Health System’s multispecialty group practice comprised of over 185 doctors and advanced practice professionals representing more than 30 medical and surgical specialties.
