In an age when the Internet and electronic media are streaming with all kinds of health information at a dizzying pace, patients attempt to sort out fact from fiction to make the best health care choices. As the public's appetite for important information rises, they are now armed with intelligent questions for their health care providers.
Experts say it's best for patients to bring up these questions with their own personal physicians, based on their own unique medical conditions. At Valley Medical Group in Dumont, board-certified family practitioner Gina F. Cabela, M.D., enjoys helping her patients make important decisions about their own health care as well as their family members' health concerns.
"I love taking care of patients of all ages and dealing with a variety of medical issues," she says. She finds the challenge of dealing with diverse patients quite fulfilling and satisfying.
Dr. Cabela joined Valley Medical Group in Dumont in January 2008. She and other physicians there provide primary care, urgent care, and preventive health care for patients of all ages. Valley Medical Group is part of Valley Health System, which also includes The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood and Valley Home Care.
Born in the Philippines, Dr. Cabela completed a bachelor of science degree in zoology at the University of the Philippines at Los Banos and was a candidate for a master's degree in marine biology when she changed her career focus.
"I was working in research on marine coastal ecosystems, which was very satisfying, but realized that what I really wanted to do was take care of patients," she says.
Dr. Cabela completed her medical degree and post-graduate internship at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center in Manila in 1999. Afterward, she joined her husband, Ramil Cabela, R.N., B.S.N., M.B.A., in the United States, where he was working as a nurse. From 2003 to 2004, she volunteered her services in the Cardiology Department at Elmhurst Medical Center in New York. She completed her family practice residency at New York Medical College at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Yonkers in 2007. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Association, and the Alumni Association of New York Medical College.
Dr. Cabela and her husband enjoy traveling around the world. She also loves cooking various cuisines.
