It’s no wonder that when asked why he chose to practice family medicine, Rhys Evan Jones, M.D., cites the variety of patients he sees and the spectrum of illnesses he diagnoses and treats.
The board-certified family practitioner – who joined Valley Medical Group in Teaneck full-time in July 2011 – majored in Asian studies at Temple University, played men’s lacrosse, and has restored his 150-year-old home. Dr. Jones also dabbles extensively in computers and earned the newly created position of practice management chief resident after he led his fellow residents at Mountainside Family Practice in Verona, N.J., into revamping the office’s database, web site, practice guidelines, patient education station, forms, audit worksheets, and patient charts.
Fittingly, Dr. Jones mentions Valley Medical Group’s electronic health records technology, which links patients from all seven practices with The Valley Hospital’s departments and services, as a benchmark of Valley Medical Group’s ability to provide high-quality patient care.
"From computers within all of our offices, we can pull up patients’ records, imaging studies, diagnostic tests, and information about hospitalizations, giving us a full snapshot of a patient’s medical care,” says Dr. Jones. “This assists us in providing not only optimal health care for the patient but also in streamlining services cost-effectively and efficiently."
Valley Medical Group in Teaneck is located at 780 Cedar Lane. It is part of Valley Health System, which also includes The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood and Valley Home Care. The practice offers comprehensive primary, preventive, urgent care, and occupational health services for patients of all ages, from school-aged children to geriatric, provided by board-certified internists and family practitioners. Testing provided on site includes blood tests, urinalyses, electrocardiograms (EKGs), pulmonary function testing, rapid strep tests, and digital X-rays.
While earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Asian studies and then a Master of Education degree in exercise physiology at Temple University in Philadelphia, Dr. Jones worked full-time as a circulation and bibliographic assistant in the Temple University Paley Library. After he received his master’s degree, he was employed as a medical research database developer for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick.
Dr. Jones received his medical degree from UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School in Newark in 1995 and completed his family practice residency in 1998 at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, where his grandfather, obstetrician W. Rhys Jones, M.D., had been director of the Department of OB/GYN and president of the medical staff.
From 1998 to 2010, Dr. Rhys Evan Jones practiced family medicine at offices in Montclair and Clifton before joining Valley Medical Group.
"Valley is a terrific, well-run organization that fosters collaboration among colleagues,” says Dr. Jones. “I am enjoying working within a wonderful professional atmosphere."
Dr. Jones resides in Montclair with his wife, classical musician and singer Geraldine Bianco, and their three children.
