As a youth, Raymond P. Visconti, Jr., M.D., was inspired by his uncle, Francis Visconti, M.D., who is an 84-year-old administrator at a small hospital in Trinidad, Colorado. Years ago, when Francis was practicing medicine full time in his rural community, his sharp diagnostic skills, gentle manner with his patients, house calls, and ability to do it all - even serve as the county coroner - touched Raymond deeply.
"On his off-days, he herded cattle, rode horses, and drove eight hours round trip to go skiing, even when he was still in his 70s," marvels Dr. Raymond P. Visconti. "His influence is one of the major reasons I chose to practice medicine."
Dr. Visconti is a board-certified internist at Valley Medical Group in Riverdale, a primary care practice located at 72 Hamburg Turnpike. Valley Medical Group is part of Valley Health System, which also includes The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood and Valley Home Care. Dr. Visconti treats patients of all ages, from 2 and above. It's a busy office, but he enjoys the challenges of diagnosing and treating patients over a continuum of care - much like his uncle does after all these years.
"I like to practice the way an 'old-time' physician practiced but with today's technology," he says. "I like to know the patient's family, where the kids go to school, what sports they enjoy."
Sports medicine is an area of interest for Dr. Visconti at Valley Medical Group in Riverdale. Previously, while employed at Valley Medical Group in Hawthorne, he was a team physician for the Hawthorne High School football team. He says he enjoys treating patients with sports injuries, especially children and teens, because it's satisfying to see them bounce back fast and heal quickly.
A graduate of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Camden, Dr. Visconti completed an internship at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick and an internal medicine residency at Hackensack University Medical Center. After graduation in 1994, he joined Valley Medical Group in Hawthorne and has worked at every Valley Medical Group location since then: in Teaneck, Hawthorne, Montvale, Dumont, Riverdale, and Waldwick. In 2002, he joined the Riverdale practice, where he says he especially relishes the camaraderie of his colleagues and the way everyone goes the extra mile to help the practice's patients.
"We work hard, but we have a lot of fun and that's what's important in life," says Dr. Visconti, a resident of Randolph in Morris County.
With modest, 'old-time' goals - a satisfying career in medicine, spending time with family, a happy life, and occasional trips to Harrah's in Atlantic City - Dr. Visconti also likes to visit his nieces and nephews at the various colleges they attend and at their school events. He also enjoys working outdoors.
"If you enjoy your career, work with a group of great people, and have the opportunity to treat your patients and make a difference in their lives, what could be better than that?" he concludes.
