When Dr. Sharon Romain’s patients turn to her for exercise advice, she tells them “Get out of the house!” The board-certified family practitioner at Valley Medical Group in Riverdale loves to run regularly and bike, hike, and swim with her daughter, Hope.
Helping patients improve their quality of life by educating them about healthy eating and exercise habits is one of the things Dr. Romain enjoys most about family practice.
“I chose to specialize in family practice because I wanted to work in primary care,” she adds. “I like the diversity and wide variety of patients and medical conditions we see. I enjoy performing minor office procedures and suturing cuts, yet I also like caring for patients with chronic illnesses. We see patients from children to senior citizens so there is a lot of variety in our day.”
Valley Medical Group in Riverdale is a primary care practice located at 72 Hamburg Turnpike. Valley Medical Group is part of Valley Health System, which also includes The Valley Hospital and Valley Home Care.
While enrolled at Houghton College in Houghton, N.Y., in the 1990s, Dr. Romain played varsity soccer for two years, ran varsity cross country for one year, and played intramural soccer, volleyball, and water polo for three years. She studied at the Goethe Institute in Germany and learned to understand the German language. She volunteered in Austria, providing emotional support to refugees from Iran, Iraq, and Bosnia, and also in Alaska at a camp for children called Echo Ranch.
After completing a bachelor of arts degree in biology from Houghton College in Houghton, N.Y., and coursework in organic chemistry and physics at Purchase College in Purchase, N.Y., Dr. Romain began her career as a service coordinator at Tanglewood Acres in Spring Valley, N.Y., where she worked with developmentally disabled adults from 1995 to 1999.
She entered the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1999. She was president of the local chapter of the American Medical Students Association from 2000 to 2001. When terrorists attacked the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, she went to Nassau University Medical Center that morning as a student volunteer.
“It was incredibly sad because we were prepared to assist in the treatment of multiple victims, but we received none because they all perished in the collapse of the Twin Towers,” she recalls.
After graduating from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2004, she completed a residency in family practice at Overlook Family Practice and Overlook Hospital in 2007. She was chief resident from 2006 to 2007. She joined Valley Medical Group in Riverdale in 2007.
“We have a wonderful staff and enjoy a family environment at our office,” says Dr. Romain, a resident of Wayne, N.J.
Even though her days are busier now, she still makes time to get out and exercise with Hope. Over the years, she finished the New York City Marathon three times and the Rhode Island Marathon once. She also enjoys reading different types of literature. She is a member of the American College of Family Physicians and would like to delve into academic medicine someday.
