As part of the family medicine team at the Hawthorne Center, Avril Anthony-Wilson, M.D., F.A.A.F.P., is extensively trained and experienced in a wide range of disciplines to offer patients a lifetime of personalized, quality care, including physical examinations and treatment for acute and chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, asthma and hypertension; some pediatric sick and well care visits; and urgent care for minor medical emergencies, such as sports injuries, sprains and burns. Dr. Wilson also provides a full range of preventive care services, including immunizations, cardiovascular risk assessments, smoking cessation assistance, health screenings and other avenues for promoting family wellness.
Inspired by her grade school textbooks, Dr. Wilson garnered an early interest in medicine. "When I was six years old, I wondered why all of the doctors in my books were men. I couldn't get a good answer and was interested in helping people, so I decided to become a physician," recalled Dr. Wilson.
Dr. Wilson launched her formal education with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biology from Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, Alabama, and a Doctor of Medicine from Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee. She subsequently completed an internship in internal medicine and a residency in anesthesiology at Tulane University Medical Center, New Orleans, Louisiana, where she served as chief resident. Her postdoctoral training continued with a clinical fellowship in obstetrical anesthesia at Harvard University School of Medicine, Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, and then a second residency in family practice at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, including a year as chief resident.
"While I enjoyed anesthesiology, I didn't feel I was having the kind of impact I desired," explained Dr. Wilson. "I was looking to develop relationships with my patients and to be part of a community." The field of family medicine proved to be a perfect fit, along with the opportunity to practice at Valley Medical Group in Hawthorne, located at 1114 Goffle Road, allowing Dr. Wilson to optimize her diverse skills and expand her continuum of care.
"I am grateful to be part of the Valley Medical Group team and feel I am making a tremendous difference in the health of our patients and community," she noted. In addition to caring for families in the Hawthorne office, Dr. Wilson also enjoys supporting the practice's occupational health and outreach efforts. She recently provided physicals for the firefighters at Wyckoff Fire Department, which held personal meaning. "One of my brothers was killed on 9/11, so I was especially thankful for the opportunity to help these individuals who serve our cities and give so much of themselves," stated Dr. Wilson.
Reflecting a strong interest in advanced education, Dr. Wilson has held numerous academic appointments, including Clinical Assistant Professor of Community and Preventive Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine; Assistant Professor, Clinical Family Medicine at both New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and SUNY Health Science Center, Downstate Medical Center; and Clinical Instructor, Anesthesiology, at Louisiana State University Medical Center. In the coming years, she hopes to continue teaching by mentoring young physicians and providing educational health seminars for the community.
Dr. Wilson has been honored with several professional distinctions, including the 1997 Resident Teacher Award bestowed by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and 1992-1993 Resident of the Year at Tulane University Medical Center. She was also awarded a Degree of Fellow by the American Academy of Family Physicians for outstanding service to family medicine, the advancement of American health care and professional development.
Dr. Wilson participates in volunteer medical missions at least once each year, providing critical health care to indigent populations throughout the world. She traveled last year with her church to Burundi, Africa to provide care to survivors of the recent civil war and is currently planning her next trip to West Africa.
Outside the field of medicine, Dr. Wilson is an avid reader and considers herself a World War II history buff. She also fosters a joy for cooking, particularly baking and Caribbean cuisine. A native of Queens, New York, Dr. Wilson and her husband, Owen, reside in Fair Lawn, New Jersey.
