As a child growing up in India, Palanipriya Kalyan, M.D., frequently tagged along when her parents practiced at the hospital they ran. By the time she was in medical school at the Chernai Medical College in 1996, she was helping her mother, an OB/GYN, deliver babies and assisting her in surgery. She went on rounds with her father, an internist, observing him caring for patients in the intensive care and cardiac care units.
“When it came time for me to choose which area of medicine to pursue, I opted for family practice because it offers me the ability to combine women’s health with many aspects of internal medicine,” says Dr. Kalyan, who now practices at Valley Health Medical Group in Hawthorne.
After finishing medical school in 2002, Dr. Kalyan worked as assistant medical officer for Poorani Hospital in India and then immigrated to the United States. For several months, she volunteered and observed physicians at S.U.N.Y. Downstate Medical Center in New York City, Florida Heart Associates in Fort Myers, and Lehigh Regional Medical Center in Lehigh Acres, Florida, near where her sister practices family medicine at a primary care clinic.
Dr. Kalyan began her family practice residency at Forest Park Hospital in St. Louis in 2005 but when the hospital closed the following year, she switched to UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J., for her final two years. While at Robert Wood Johnson, she volunteered with the hospital’s community outreach program to provide primary care to low-income residents of New Brunswick.
After completing her residency in 2008, Dr .Kalyan joined Valley Health Medical Group in Hawthorne, located at 1114 Goffle Road. She is board-certified in family practice, speaks English and Tamil, and is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Rotary Club of India. At Valley Health Medical Group in Hawthorne, Dr. Kalyan says she especially enjoys performing minor surgical procedures and caring for geriatric patients.
“There is a great need for follow-up care for geriatric patients, and in the future I may consider a geriatrics fellowship,” she says.
In her leisure time, Dr. Kalyan enjoys surfing the Internet, listening to music, and playing badminton and golf.
