For the past 24 years, Philippe Desplat, D.O., has been a reliable friend and mainstay in the health of thousands of people in the Bergenfield/Dumont area. From infants to seniors, his patients at Valley Medical Group in Dumont have stayed with him through acute and chronic illnesses. Many of them have grown up with him and are now bringing their own children to him for expert medical care and advice.
“Getting to know my patients and their entire families over a long period of time and being able to help them stay healthy or care for them when they are ill is the most satisfying part of practicing family medicine,” says Dr. Desplat. “These 24 years have been quite a ride.”
Dr. Desplat, of Old Tappan, is senior medical director and a board-certified family practitioner at Valley Medical Group in Dumont. Valley Medical Group is part of Valley Health System, which also includes The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood and Valley Home Care. Dr. Desplat has been associated with Valley Medical Group in Dumont since completing his residency in family practice in 1984 and moving back to Bergen County, where he grew up.
Born in France, Dr. Desplat came to the United States when he was four years old. His family settled in Saddle Brook, and he attended the local high school. When it came time for college, he decided to stay in New Jersey. He graduated from Rutgers College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biochemistry and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
He chose to pursue a degree in osteopathic medicine because he greatly admired his family physician, who was an osteopathic physician. Osteopathic physicians receive the same medical education as other physicians, with the addition of special training in holistic medicine and how the musculoskeletal system affects the rest of the body.
Dr. Desplat was one of the 24 members of the charter class of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-School of Osteopathic Medicine. After graduation in 1981, he completed an internship and his family practice residency at UMDNJ-John F. Kennedy Hospital in Stratford, N.J. He extended his medical training to complete a fellowship in family practice research and faculty development at Michigan State University. He has been an assistant clinical professor at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, in Newark, since 1994. Third-year medical students from the school work at Valley Medical Group in Dumont as part of their medical training.
Dr. Desplat is a member of the American Osteopathic Association and the American College of Osteopathic Family Practice. He speaks English and French.
On days off, Dr. Desplat enjoys gardening, photography, traveling, and listening to classic rock & roll. He and his wife, a school nurse at Bergenfield High School, have two daughters: one who graduated from New York University and is a marketing assistant for NBC and another who is a senior at Wagner College.
At Valley Medical Group in Dumont, Dr. Desplat says he particularly enjoys practicing preventive medicine and the specialized dermatology services the practice offers. He is a certified laser physician, who uses the Candela Gentle YAGTM laser system for safe and effective cosmetic treatments for all skin types, including the removal of unwanted hair and spider veins and for skin-tightening procedures.
