Maternal and Child Health Program

Maternity Care

Maternal and Child Health Program Registered nurses, rehabilitation specialists, social workers, a nutritionist and other professionals work with new mothers to give them the care, support and information they need to successfully meet the challenges of motherhood. With a physician's referral, a registered nurse will contact the mother within 24 hours to arrange an initial home visit. During the first visit, the nurse will conduct a thorough assessment of mother and baby. If the physician has ordered any blood tests, the nurse will perform these procedures in the comfort of the patient's home, saving a trip to the hospital. Education on a variety of topics, including breastfeeding, bathing and communication is also conducted on the initial visit. Follow-up visits may be scheduled as needed. Nursing care is also available for women experiencing a high-risk pregnancy.

The birth of a baby is an exciting time for everyone in the family, and Valley Home Care encourages fathers, siblings and other loved ones to participate in the care and education of mother and infant.

Pediatric Care

Children have unique needs, and Valley Home Care offers specialized pediatric programs to address these challenges. A treatment plan is developed for each patient by the child's physician and home care staff. Infants and children with an acute or chronic illness receive high quality care from our team of professionals, including pediatric registered nurses, social workers and rehabilitation specialists. Fostering optimal levels of growth and development is Valley Home Care's goal.

Children suffering from high-risk conditions are treated with skill and compassion. Care is provided for acute and chronic illnesses, including complications from premature birth, nutrition deficiency, cardio-respiratory dysfunction, cerebral palsy and diabetes. Parents are instructed in feeding techniques, nutrition and parenting skills. Services are also provided to children requiring home IV, tube feedings and phototherapy. Children who are neurologically impaired or in need of postoperative care are also treated. A special program, Butterflies, is even available for children with a progressive life-threatening illness.

With C.H.A.M.P. (our pediatric asthma program) a specially trained nurse visits the home to help the child and family identify factors that cause asthmatic episodes. The program is aimed at helping children control their asthma and reduce trips to the emergency room.

Additional Help & Support

Through the Valley Help for Moms program, specially trained home health aides offer ongoing education in breast- and bottle-feeding, skin care, bathing and other topics. Our home health aides also serve as an extra pair of hands for grocery shopping, meal preparation, light housekeeping and other duties.

Many mothers in the region have found Valley Help for Moms to be a most valuable service during what can be a hectic and challenging time in their lives. To arrange for this service, please call (201) 291-6000. (A physician's referral is not required.)

The Professional Team

All care provided by our Maternal & Child Health Team is coordinated on a multidisciplinary basis. Representatives from many departments confer and guide the treatment plan. The team also serves as a valuable source of information on the many community resources available locally. This expertise enables patients to utilize programs of which they may not have been aware. In many instances, your nurse can assist you in completing the paperwork and forms required by local agencies.

Eligibility

Services are provided to families throughout northern New Jersey. Referrals for care can come from the family, physician, social worker or hospital discharge planner. Services are reimbursable in a variety of ways including Medicaid (for residents of Bergen and Passaic counties), private insurance and self-payment.
