Respite Care

If you provide care for someone living in the home and need temporary relief due to illness or unavailability, respite services may be available to you. Respite may be provided in the home or in a facility. Typically, respite care is paid for with private funds; however, there is a benefit for respite under Hospice care and NJ does offer financial assistance to eligible participants. The Statewide Respite Care Program will coordinate and finance respite care for eligible caregivers. Bergen County residents may click here.

For a general list of respite programs in Bergen County, click here.

For additional information and resources on respite care you can link to either The Family Caregiver or The Respite Locator.

Rockland County, New York, also offers a free caregiver respite program for their residents. The program pays for a weeklong stay in a licensed adult home for Rockland residents 60 years and older. Private rooms, meals and personal assistance are provided. Programs are available for early to moderate levels of dementia and non-Alzheimer's seniors. There is no income criterion, but an in-home assessment is needed to determine functional eligibility. Call the Office for the Aging Senior Care Helpline at  1-845-364-3444 for additional information.
