Valley opened this new facility in response to a growing need in the community. According to the National Kidney Foundation, about 345,000 Americans are being treated for kidney failure, or end-stage renal disease, and about 250,000 of those are on chronic dialysis. The number of patients with end-stage renal disease is expected to increase by about 10 percent each year.
Valley witnessed this first-hand after opening its current 11-station chronic dialysis unit. The unit rapidly reached and exceeded its 96-patient capacity. Valley is currently maintaining a list of more than 30 patients who are waiting for a spot to become available at Valley.
The Valley Hospital Renal Care Center of Fair Lawn has 18 stations and two isolation rooms, offering the capacity to treat 144 patients annually. In addition to increasing the capacity to provide dialysis services for patients with end-stage renal disease, the new Center is more convenient and accessible to patients than the hospital-based unit, and, for most chronic dialysis patients, provides a more appropriate and comfortable treatment setting for this type of care than does an inpatient hospital.
The Valley Hospital’s chronic dialysis unit has been recognized among the top three programs in the state. With the opening of the new facility, Valley will be able to offer the same high-quality care in a more comfortable and convenient setting.
Special amenities available at the new Center include:
- Individual televisions and video cassette recorders for each patient
- Computer access for laptops
- Ability to use cell phones during treatment
- Portable phone for local calls
- Light and airy space
- Convenient parking
