SHARPEN YOUR MIND WITH THESE SUPERFOODS

Diet can play a major role in brain health. Research has linked specific nutrients to better memory, performance and alertness. These foods promote good blood flow to the brain and may help counteract decreased brain function as we age. As you are setting your new 2015 health goals consider incorporating more "brain super foods" on your to do list.

Vegetables, especially those rich in antioxidants, are crucial for healthy brain function. Broccoli, cabbage and dark leafy vegetables are great food sources.

Berries, especially dark ones, and cherries are rich in anthocyanins and other compounds called flavonoids. Sweet berries are a perfect snack all by themselves, but can also be added to yogurts, salads or your favorite breakfast cereal.

Omega 3 fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain. This explains why consuming adequate amounts of the essential fatty acids is important for your brain to function at its best. Some food sources of omega-3 fatty acids include fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna, and sardines, algae, seaweed and nut oils.

Nuts and seeds are rich in vitamin E, an antioxidant. Have a small handful, throw them in a salad, sprinkle them on your oatmeal or mix them into a stir-fry. There are so many tasty possibilities.

Great news........as you sharpen your mind your heart will also benefit from these nutrient packed foods. So eat up!
