Periodically, we will introduce you to an employee from the Pharmacy.
Name: Tomas Hiciano
Title: Manager, Pharmacy Operations
Tomas went to Lehman College in the Bronx and while there worked part-time at a privately owned retail pharmacy. The pharmacist there noticed Tomas' interest in the field and began to share what it would be like to work in the field. “It fascinated me when the pharmacist was able to tell a patient so much information after seeing a prescription with a few symbols on it.,” says Tomas. “I knew this was the field for me.” He transferred to the Arnold and Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy at Long Island University where he earned his B.S. in pharmacy.
Tomas has been at Valley for 4 years. As the day shift coordinator, he is responsible for the daily operations of the pharmacy, particularly with respect to the Emergency Department, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Same Day Surgery and Endoscopy.
Says Tomas, “What I like the best about working at Valley is that all the pharmacists get an opportunity to be clinical pharmacists and use the skills learned in school to better serve patients. We are constantly interacting with physicians and nursing and tailoring drug regimens. We like to think of ourselves as a resource to all the other health professionals.”
He continues, “I also oversee the day shift pharmacists and technicians as well as work as a staff pharmacist. My day consists of many different jobs all rolled up into one.”
Outside of work Tomas enjoys playing sports, being outdoors and spending quality time with his wife and two children.
