Receives Outstanding Achievement Award:
The Only Program in Northern New Jersey to Earn Recognition
The Valley Hospital’s cancer program has been honored with the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer’s (CoC’s) Outstanding Achievement Award. Valley is one of only three hospitals in New Jersey – and the only one in northern New Jersey - to receive this recognition.
“The CoC Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes the significant commitment by the administration and personnel at your institution to providing high-quality cancer care to your patients, and in meeting and exceeding the standards set by our CoC Accreditation Program,” said Stephen B. Edge, M.D., Chair of the Commission. “Not only have you met the basic standards of our Accreditation Program, but you have also excelled in six areas where commendation has been awarded.”
Established in 2004, the Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. Valley received the award following an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor.
“This award reflects Valley’s commitment to providing exceptional cancer care to our patients,” said Robert Korst, M.D., Director of Valley’s Blumenthal Cancer Center. “The Commission on Cancer’s Outstanding Achievement Award is recognition of the quality of our comprehensive, multidisciplinary patient care. I am very proud of our entire team for earning this award.”

Designated a Comprehensive Hospital Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons, Valley's Oncology Services are guided by a multidisciplinary Cancer Committee that emphasizes “Total Care,” defined by Valley as a team approach composed of primary care physicians, surgeons, oncologists, radiation therapists, nurses, social workers and home care services led by highly skilled oncology nurse clinician. Valley is the market leader in the oncology field, caring for more cancer patients than any other hospital in Bergen and Passaic counties combined.

Treatment options for oncology patients include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation oncology.
Operating one of the busiest Radiation Oncology services in the state, Valley’s facility includes three linear accelerators and computer-aided diagnosis and treatment and simulation through use of a flow cytometer. In 1998, Valley became the first hospital in New Jersey to use Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). IMRT delivers hundreds of radiation beams that are tailored to the conformity of each individual tumor or lesion. Because of its ability to contour the radiation beams to the actual shape of the area to be treated, IMRT spares surrounding tissues and organs. Recently, the hospital added BAT (B-mode Acquisition and Targeting), which is an imaging system used in tandem with IMRT to pinpoint the exact location of a tumor prior to daily treatment.

The hospital’s oncology services encompass a wide variety of support groups and services for patients and their families, including:
- Weekly support groups for breast, prostate, and lung cancer patients, as well as for those who care for cancer patients.
- A comprehensive calendar of educational programs including “Learning About Cancer,” a one-day educational session providing an overview on cancer and its treatments, side effects, emotional issues and community resources, and “Coping with Cancer,” a five-session series for those diagnosed within the last year.
- Free annual screenings for skin, prostate, breast, colon and oral cancer.
- Extensive Home Care and Hospice programs that care not only for the needs of patients but also every member of the family touched by cancer.
- A “Best Medicine Cart.” Founded on the saying that “laughter is the best medicine,” this cart visits each oncology patient and is stocked with entertainment options.
