Neuromuscular Disorders

Neuromuscular disorders affect the nerves that control voluntary muscles like the ones in your arms and legs. When these nerve cells become unhealthy or die, communication between your nervous system and muscles breaks down. The most common symptoms of these disorders are weakness, twitching, cramps, aches and pains, as well as joint and movement problems. Some neuromuscular disorders also affect the muscles of the heart and the lungs, and can lead to life threatening cardiac and respiratory problems.

Some of the most common neuromuscular disorders include:

  • Polyneuropathy with Variants
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome and Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy
  • Myopathy
  • Myasthenia Gravis

Less common disorders include:

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Spinal muscular atrophy

The causes and risk factors for neuromuscular disorders are not yet fully understood for all diagnoses. Some may be caused by a genetic predisposition, a gene mutation, or even brought on by an immune system disorder. The goal of treatment is to reduce symptoms, increase mobility and lengthen life. Depending on the specific diagnosis, various treatment options are available to target the underlying pathology and reverse symptoms.
